Here's my quick, what I read. Hope to get together something a little more review-ish this week. I done chewed off a wee bit too much.

THIS JOURNAL BELONGS TO RATCHET by Nancy J. Cavenaugh-my gosh love the voice in this one and love the twist on journal writing as assigned by teacher, in this case the teacher is dad. And let me tell you, as a writer I can tell you there does not appear to me once wasted word in this one-tight, tight tight the writing is. Finally, this may be a homeschooled, ratchet holding child with a rather unusual upbringing but boy, kids will relate to her as she struggles to find herself and some friends, too.

The following Linky is for the Kidlit Giveaway Hop. If you are interested in checking out #MiddleGradeMay you can go here.

  2. For #MiddleGradeMay, I recently finished INSIDE OUT AND BACK AGAIN by Thanhha Lai. It was a beautifully written story about a 10-yo girl who flees the fall of Saigon with her family and comes to America.

  3. My favorite recent read is probably The Runaway King by Jennifer Nielsen.

For the Challenge, I finished Canary in a Coal Mine and am almost finished with New Land (Chronicles of Egg).

    1. Must check out Canary in a Coal Mine, not familiar with that one.

And oh my yes on Runaway King...LOVE that one and have the sequel lined up as part of my #middlegrademay reading.

  4. Hmmmmm. Recently, I read a wonderful book called After Eli by Rebecca Rupp. It's hard to pick a favorite, but this one is a favorite of my recent reads.

  5. You are one busy lady, Deb! :) And I never heard of This Journal Belongs to Ratchet, so thanks for the head-up.

It's almost impossible for me to choose ONE favorite book. Egad! There are so many. I'll go with MOON OVER MANIFEST for MG and SPEAK for YA.

I'm also checking in for May MG Reading Challenge.

    This week, I read:

There's a Girl in My Hammerlock
The Secret Garden (for at least the 10th time)
    The Shakespeare Stealer

So that brings me up to 6 total, so far.

    1. You are rocking the middle grade reading...and do you know...I have not read Moon over Manifest yet? Yeah.

Love love love Speak. A classic and still so relevant.

  6. Wow! You have been busy! I have a hard time picking favorites, but recently I've loved Marissa Meyer's Lunar Chronicles series. On the middle grade side, I have a few series I really love--Jack Blank by Matt Myklusch and Princess for Hire by Lindsey Leavitt are two that stand out. But there are so many more MG books I love, too!

  7. I have to choose a favorite?? I just can't. So I'll wimp out and say I've been waiting to read BIGGER THAN A BREADBOX since it was released last year but my library only has a digital copy and I want a print copy.

  8. Right now I'm reading the Mark of Athena to my kids and it is fantastic. Thanks for the giveaway.

  9. If I have to pick, I'd say one of my all time favorites is Matilda by Roald Dahl. And for the reading challenge I finished The Year the Swallows Came Early, which Flash recommended on his blog today at www.flashthecatblog.com. I also read Road Trip by Gary Paulsen (and his son Jim??). I really enjoyed it, but it was definitely an older middle-grade book. And I finally got to Liar and Spy by Rebecca Stead which I LOVED!

  10. I love how you raved about Ratchet. I've been on the fence about it until now. I believe I just added to my list. ;)

    For #middlegrademay I read:
    - Lone Bean
    - Frogged

I'm planning a recap on my blog for my readers sometime this week.

For the Giveaway, it's so hard to pick a favorite middle grade so I'm going YA. I recently read Scarlet (book 2 of Lunar Chronicles). It was so good and I was very sad to return my copy to the library.

  11. Favorite MG: anything by Roald Dahl. On the other end of the spectrum, I recently reread Bridge to Terabithia and cried like a baby.

I will eventually read Ratchet. Promise.

  12. I finished Jennifer A. Nielsen's THE FALSE PRINCE this weekend and really enjoyed it. I connected with the protag, Sage, right away and only put down the book when I was forced to by other obligations. If I had an absolutely free day, I'm sure I would have finished it in one sitting. Nielsen's worldbuilding wasn't forced. It was as though I knew of the places mentioned. A good adventure of intrigue and adventure. I look forward to the sequel when I make a better dent in the other MG books I have yet to read. :)

As for the Giveaway question, I think it's a tie between THE SECRET GARDEN (Frances Hodgson Burnett) and TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD (Harper Lee). Despite my recent haul of male protags for the reading challenge, it's nice to remember the strong female characters I read about when I was younger. Honorable mentions go to Judy Blume's ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT'S ME, MARGARET and FRIENDS FOREVER. :)

    Cheers,

    Tonette
