#Wipmadness Check In-February 13

Here we are on week three of February #wipmadness. The weeks seem to be flying by. Thought I'd start us off this week with Happy Birthday wishes for yesterday to Judy Blume! From her site:

When I began to write, some people humored me. "You've always been such a dreamer!" Some discouraged me. "Do you know what the odds are...do you know how many would-be writers there are out there?" Some were actually angry. "What makes you think you can write?"

Very glad she did not listen and kept on writing. Sometimes it is just what you have to do.

Spent most of my time this last week working through the articles for the course I am taking. It's with Susan Sipal of Harry Potter for Writers and even though I am only finishing up week one (there are three more to go) I can say I highly recommend it. It's not just for fantasy writers. Heck, I am even learning loads about characters and stakes that I can apply to my picture books!

Spent Sunday night working on my submission for the Western Washington Annual SCBWI Conference. Got one query done and out for a picture book and have two more I am working on for the same picture book, just researching the agents some more to make sure they are a good fit.

Got in just a couple of #5minblitz 's.

For the upcoming week:
-carry on with Harry Potter for Writers course
-create a character notebook for Happy Medium and write a not to be used scene for some of my cameo characters and other secondary's who don't play a bit role in the book ala this exercise compliments of Danika Dinsmore.

Enjoy the week all and keep on writing!

  1. Hi and good morning! A quick post so as not to procrastinate longer. I hit 37,2k on the WIP yesterday. 800 words shy.

This week the goal is 8.8k. Eek
    Great week all!

    1. Thanks Natalie. Re-learning how to take advantage of smaller chunks of time is finally starting to pay off. And yes on the course. Her insight and articles are so good!

  3. I'm happy to report I made my first goal of editing chapter 14 by Feb.12 and am one scene up on ch. 15.

My goal for the week is to keep (3rd draft) editing ch. 15, while spending afternoons adding new scenes to the 2nd draft of ch. 17.

Except for today because every Monday I work on my YA novel, Angel Eyes. Today's goal: write the scene between Angel and Mr. Jones, then plot out more scenes.

  4. Way to go on a variety of progress, Deb. I'm right on track to finish this revision by the end of the month. 45 pages to go! And I have excellent circumstances to get a lot done this week. Go, team #wipmadness! Go, go, go! And yes, I was a cheerleader, briefly. Have to try everything once, right?

  5. Entering the revision cave this week. My goal is to tackle item 1 by weekend.

Good luck on your WWA conference submission! That's one of the best conferences, wish I was going but will be able to next year when it's just a drive away :)

  6. I'm having trouble with this check-in business, mostly because it's difficult to qualify what I've been doing exactly :-). I have been busy, but with lots of odds and ends. Fixing scenes here and there, working on workshop material, etc. I wrote a synopsis for my newest book this week (thanks Angelina for all the help!) and I'm really pleased with it. I'm awaiting feedback on a manuscript from my agent and several beta readers, and so I plan to keep busy with my workshop material until that comes in before revising again.

Maybe we'll be able to catch up at the WWA conference? I'll be there too.

    1. Yes on the conference! We should be doing supper again with a bunch of Blue Boarders-either Sat or Friday.

Sounds like you've been crazy busy and productive. Lots of getting prepped for March. Good luck on the feed back!!

  7. My goals have been turned upside-down. And I'm okay with that.

I won't be either a) working on STAR KIN (much) or b) researching agents (at all) becaues I realized that for the good of my story, I need to get my head out of my arse and change SIGN OF THE STAR from first-person present tense to first-person past.

So new goal: try to finish changing a chapter every 1-2 days. Chapter 1 is nearly done. I'm excited, even if it does delay my agent quest. I'm pretty certain that the tense was a turnoff for some agents, because they found it hard to get into.

    1. Okay...totally cheering you on for changing of the POV. Questing for an agent with the your changed ms sounds like the way to go. Good luck!

    2. Thanks! I hope I don't need it, but you never know ... ;)

  8. Oh! Did I miss last week? Eep. Not just the check-in, the whole week seems to have disappeared. I whipped my ms into a beta-ready state and sent it off to my first two victims, hurrah! I'm planning to do another round of betas after I get feedback and revise, so querying is still off a bit in the future for this one.

And in the meantime, I'm back on another in-progress wip for the next couple of weeks! Fun, fun, fun! Although I might sneak in a little time to brainstorm on another shiny new idea that I want to capture.

Congrats on getting your WWA subs ready, Deb! And to everyone else for the variety of hard work this week. Yaaaaay, #wipmadness!!

    1. It is crazy how the weeks can sneak up and then by on us! Yay for being beta ready. Hope you enjoy the next up of weeks on your other wip. Shiny new idea? We love new shinies, lol!

  9. Loads of progress, wipmadness team! I hit 10K on the WIP last week, and made all but 2 of my nightly #5minblitz appointments. My goal for this week is to blitz every night and try to his 13K. I'm skeptical because I'm traveling to SF for an anime convention on Thurs thru Sun. But any progress is progress, after all. xoxo to all!

    1. Go go on those nightly blitz's. I am going to join you...one per day. Enjoy the convention! And like you say progress is progress. Journey of a 1000 miles begins with one step!

  10. I have got to be better with checking in!

So I've sent my manuscript off to 4 ppl and in a little read through I realized I had tons of little typos and bull crap from my last edit so Lora, when you get to it, I'm sorry
    for that:-P
I plan on finishing another beta read this week and I would really like to begin plotting for another wip I have in mind. we'll see how out goes.
    Have a fabulous week!

  11. Checking in late!

OK, let's see. Working every day is going well so far. I'm getting something in, even if it's just small. I'm up to almost 6000 words on my zero draft, and I've written 3000 or so words on other projects. As for my detailed outline ... yeah. Gotta work on that. It's probably the thing that I'm least looking forward to, which is why I'm avoiding it. So -- tomorrow!

    1. Tomorrow tomorrow you can outline tomorrow! Good luck, we're cheering you on. Way to go on the words getting on that paper!

  12. Arrgghh! I am SO behind on this. As I am with my WIP. After getting the Avon thing out I'm having trouble jumping back into finishing the duology. I was a little leery of dropping the duology, but the open call was too much to pass up. However, now I'm way behind, haven't been able to focus, and it's irritating. I read through what I have of the second book in an attempt to re-spark and remind me of what I had planned, but it didn't work so well. I may have to spend some time outlining to get myself back on track. I do have another project I'm sure I can work on, but I really wanted to finish this one first instead of leaving it on the back burner.

So, since I'm really late in chiming in, I guess my goals for the end of the month are to find a way to get back into the duology (which is starting to feel more like a trilogy, sadly), and start getting the word count I want again. I may have to go the route of a bunch of other famous novelists and look for inspiration in the bottom of a shot glass. ;) Heck, it's worked before. Actually, all it does is relaxes me and forces me to drop easier into my meditative-like focusing state where everything but the writing melts away, but whatever works, eh? ;)

    1. Well then...cheers! And good luck-yeah on getting this one done instead of back burner-ing it. On the other hand maybe if you start the other, the duo logy will start knocking on the door.

  13. Blah! I am behind. I've had too much going on at work and with Ghost Daughter, so I'm hitting the wall a bit. I'm still working on the final bits of this chapter and then one more to go! Nearing 70K, about my average length. So, I shall press on and pray...a lot!

    Keep Wip-ing it!
