March Madness Friday Check-In

Writing, blogging, reading, or all three! How did your first day go? Mine was interesting. Have a mentor in my wip. She was good. Until, as I started digging into her backstory, I realized she is in fact bad. Very very...BAD. Happy Friday! I am off to calmly calmy figure out what up with computer.

If you are interested in still signing up, there is time. Head over to Denise Jaden's blog and read all about it.

    1. Yay for progress on editing! Thanks on the computer (it was a simple fix--battery and charger issue) and have a great #wipmadness weekend!

  2. Oh boy - nothing like a little computer stress when a blog post is due! Deep breaths.

My first and second days have gone well. My normal goal is 1k a day on weekdays and 1.5k on weekend days - So far, I've got 1k/day - and it's fun to think I may hit 60k by the end of next week. Once I get there, I'll have a good word count and the story can end at anytime - well hopefully at the right time.

You mentor sounds deliciously deviant. Evil characters are such fun to write.

    1. Deep breaths appreciated! It was "just" the charger and battery issue. Next week will be better prepped if something comes up!

Way to go on the word count. Hope you well on your way with the weekend writing.

Oh man, I know on my librarian who is now a lib-scarian...just didn't see her coming and am loving it!

  3. Ooooh, love it when a good character goes bad. :-) I'm doing well with the writing/revising, but it looks like I might get sidetracked with some deeper outlining on my novella draft. Gotta line up those ducks!

Having a ton of fun reading too. Finished WHERE THINGS COME BACK last night, and wow, can totally see how it won the Morris and Printz. Awesome.

Looking forward to digging into my beta reading this weekend--have two great manuscripts to get to!

    1. LOL on the good character gone bad-kinda loving her I am! Oh yes on lining up the ducks. I am relining mine up with this new draft. Some of them are behaving like cats, heh heh.

I must, must read WHERE THINGS COME BACK. In fact need to add reading to my wipmadness-and blogging, too.

      Happy reading this weekend!!

  6. Baha. Every "good" character has their secrets.

I made it as far as Chapter 6, which isn't quite as much work as I wanted to get done. Last night I was the only one who showed up at the write-in, which meant that I had the coffee shop meeting room to myself. This turned out to be both good and bad. I finished a novel, responded to a few posts and my "other" thrice-monthly checkin group (beginning, middle, end of month), and connected with a few other twitter writers.

Today I have my lunch break and the evening to myself. I hope to get a lot done. Well, Friday Night Twitter Writing Party (#fntwp) aside. ;)

    1. Hmmm, thanks...I think I need to give all my characters a secret now!

  7. Hope the computer woes don't slow you down Deb! And such fun to learn the nitty gritty about our characters *insert evil cackle*

Day two of my biggest challenge - wake up and write - is once again successful. If I turn on the computer and get right to the story, rather than the emails and social networks, I find myself more focused. Not sure how long I can sustain this, but it's proving to be a positive habit.

So far I've deep-edited 4 pages, wrote 1k, and writing a rough draft of a review. I'm going to push hard today - would like a little downtime this weekend :)

Good luck to everyone - cheering you all on!

    1. Thanks Marie, all is fixed and yes on the evil cackle, lol...I catch myself doing just that as I now envision the shock of the kids in the book when they find out the truth about Marion (the librarian), heh heh.

Way to go on the wake up and write. I _love_ that...stat your day with a WAP or WUP WUAP A**.

You are really moving along. Have a great #wipmadness weekend.

  8. Well, yesterday managed to do the half hour writing last night that was my goal after 2.5 hrs. of karate training (exercise nausea is not pretty, btw). So was pretty happy with that. Didn't have it in me to also write the blog post that I'm supposed to post today, so will have to just do it today.

Today I'm hoping to do some writing during lunch hour (per my other goal) and then at least half an hour tonight. Plus will write that blog post, probably during lunch hour as well.

    Good luck to everyone!

  9. Thanks Deb! Hope your computer probs get solved soon! I hate that!

This morning's writing was MUCH BETTER than yesterday's. I got into the zone for a short time, and I'm starting to enjoy this book. I'm a little confused about where the story is going tomorrow and how exactly to make it "work", but I'll push through.

  10. Howdy Gang... Deb, I feel your pain. My laptop died in a fall and that's definitely crimping my writing style. I work at the desktop, so I don't like to write here as well, but it's either that or Don't Write. So the choice is clear. Hope your troubles get fixed soon. And LOVE the sudden bad guy. Have fun! Must sneak in paragraphs around the day job today.

    1. Oh Lori...you and me both on the desktop!! Now, I do have the laptop back and running but yes on I have other options so...write it would have been. Hope you got that paragraph in yesterday and more today!

    Day 2.

    Still chugging along.

I added more reading to my to-do list. Since its inception, I've written my MG WIP in first person (mind you, I've changed the voice so many times: man looking back, adolescent that progresses three years in the story, and now a twelve year-old just weeks before his thirteenth birthday). Lately, something's been nagging me enough to try writing in third person. I'm reading books with similar MCs to get an understanding of that rhythm. I got used to having the limited POV of just the MC that drafting scenes now feels like a comic strip. I can almost see the heading "Meanwhile..." I want to add more richness to the story by getting into the minds of other characters, but I want it to flow naturally.

Hope everyone else is doing well!

    Cheers,

    Tonette

    1. I hear you on the pov switches...and yes on the third person, especially ( I find) with fantasy or a contemporary where the world plays a huge role. Having a bigger pov-whether third or omni gives your read a bigger view and adds layer to the story you could not capture with first (well, unless, you alternate?). AnyHOO...good luck with your writing this week end and keep on chugging along!

  13. Hope your computer issue is easily solved. That can really put a damper on your writing intentions.

My paltry 736 words yesterday prompted an early nose-to-the-grindstone start this morning. Hopefully I'll have more to show for today's effort. I'm off for a quick check in with my other March writing buddies at Seekerville, and then it's back to work! Happy writing!

  15. That last comment previewed well, but once it posted there were errors. Weird.

You all are bastions of inspiration. Every one seems to be doing well. I wrote 2228 words this morning. I think I should have been more aggressive with my goal, but maybe (hopefully not!) this river of words will dry up soon.

Good luck, all, and happy writing/editing/reading/blogging/fixing your computer. :)

  16. I added another one hundred words onto my novel, and I started working on a short story that I had put down a while back. I'm also making my way through a 1500 page book, with the first 200 pages done in two days. I plan to get the rough draft for my novel done by the end of the month, and I plan to have the rough draft of my story done in two weeks. Hopefully I will get these goals accomplished.

  17. Boo for computer issues but YAY for discovering character, Deb.

My second day was great. My favorite thing to do on a Friday afternoon is to get home from work, make a coffee and settle in for a date with my WIP. It's hard to measure progress when you're revising, but I got through another tricky scene and started a new one from scratch.

Today my goal is to write a chapter from scratch (I can't believe I'm still adding things). Then I'll be past the part of my WIP that needed the most work.

  18. Hi yous! 1630 dayjob words -- does it count if it's nonfic, creative biography?

*Sigh* Okay, I've got two hrs between dayjob and crit group tonight. Goal is beta 1 hr, #5minblitz, and write 500 words on the WIP.

  19. Sorry to hear of computer issues! They always throw a wrench in the works.

My plan is to write at least 500 words when I get home from work today. Which would be easier if I had worked out how exactly this transition/sequel scene was going to play out... ah well. Perhaps that, more than 500 words, will be today's goal.

    Cheers,

My writing time has been filled with getting excited about all thing writing - attended the TWUC 'Be your own publicist' workshop on Thursday. Fantastic info and met many intriguing writers.
Tonight, I'm learning how to edit for a class tomorrow. Chickens are all well, child has whooping cough, internet is about to be shunned! I'm rolling with it - when the child recovers the chickens will undoubtedly get broody. At least I can control the urge to surf.
Cheers all, you've made such great progress already!

  23. I admit that I've gotten very little done. My work bagged me with only one person to help out with a workload normally done by a group of 5-6 for the last two days!

That however, is pretty much the excuse it sounds like. ;)

I am working tonight at finishing my query letter so that I can send it out tomorrow though! Then I can work on my editing for the rest of the weekend!

  25. A bit late because we ran out for an RPG game session. Since I got my weekly word count Thursday, I worked on the beta reading I've been meaning to do. Got through 15 pages. Not much, but it's getting there. I like to be thorough. I think I'll be trying to get more of it done over the weekend between other plans, so I'll at least have something to report on Saturday and Sunday.
